OKLAHOMA CITY (KSWO) — According to a new report, Oklahoma is now the lightning capital of the United States following 2025.
The 2025 U.S. Lightning Report from Advanced Environmental Monitoring, a group that measures lightning strikes, says Oklahoma has dethroned Florida with the highest total concentration of lightning. For 2025, Oklahoma showed a concentration of 73 flashes per square mile.
The most lightning-dense county in the state is Kay County at just over 123 lightning flashes per square mile.
In addition to Oklahoma taking the top spot for lightning, Texas took the top spot for storm intensity.
Texas saw a total of 9,103 Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts, more than twice that of second place, according to AEM............
